Sherrie Ortiz is omnipresent—figuratively and literally. After decades of owning a bakery, Ortiz wanted to spread her wings a bit. So, she started Just One Day Travel Tours, where she curates personalized walking and bus tours for conferences, family events, team bonding, reunions, and more. “I love it when someone calls me and says, ‘I have this crazy idea for a tour,’” she says. “I enjoy getting people out to try something new.”
Ortiz tells us she’s always loved planning trips. “The logistics, the hunt for cool stuff to do—All those things are exciting to me,” she says. “I enjoy a good gathering of people that just want to relax and have fun. It’s all very refreshing.”
The self-proclaimed thrill seeker says if you’re adventurous, she’s pretty much up for anything. “I love to go zip-lining, rappel, and snow-tubing—all tours I plan to do in the future if you are game,” she adds. “I’m waiting for the right group of people that want to go snow-tubing this winter!”
Want to see and be seen while you’re in KC? Ortiz says she can make it happen—and there’s no group too big or too small that she can’t handle. (Corporate convention attendees, this means you!) You can follow her adventures on both Facebook and Instagram.
We caught up with the mobile maven while she was out and about to pepper her with our perplexing questionnaire. Bless.
The Pitch: Which is unequivocally better—Creamy or chunky peanut butter?
Sherrie Ortiz: When it comes to PB, I am all in on chunky, sometimes even the extra chunky. I love foods with texture. Without the added texture in peanut butter, it’s just pasty and unenjoyable.
If I have to add my preferred jelly to go with it, it’s pineapple.
What album cover best represents your life?
This is a hard one. I’m an ’80s child for sure, but now I listen to just about all genres—old and new.
If I had to choose, it would be Blood, Sweat & Tears Greatest Hits. I am not sure I can pin down how it represents my life, but it is a defiantly roll-the-windows-down, long drive, sing at the top of your voice, road trip album. My first car had an eight-track player, so I was able to pick up the tapes cheap at garage sales, and BST was always available.
As an adult, what childhood board game would you absolutely crush?
Clue! I loved everything about it—running from room to room to find the next clue, secret passageways, narrowing it down to the final guess. I’m very strategic! I can rule this game for sure.
Without a doubt, what non-Oscar-winning actor deserves the Academy Award the most?
I don’t pay too much attention to the Hollywood awards scene, but I’m a fan of Jim Carrey. Even though he has won two Golden Globes (among other awards), he has not claimed the Oscar. They say comedians never win an Oscar, but, to me, the variety of characters he plays is impressive.
